Diabetes - What Is It?
Diabetes is a condition in which a person have a high level of glucose in their system. This is cause by the inability of the person body's doesn't produce enough insulin or the body doesn't respond properly to the produced insulin. Insulin is the hormone produce in the pancreas which enable the body cells to absord glucose to produce energy for daily life. There are several type of diabetes. But the most common type that most suffered are Type 1 diabetes, Type 2 diabetes and Gestational diabetes.
Among the most frequent symptoms of diabetes are frequent urination and increase of thirst. With the high concentration of glucose in a diabetic person's urine, the glucose draw water out of the blood. This increase the need of urinating and thirst. Beside that, fatigue and hunger also a common symptoms for diabetes. When the glucose/insulin system is functioning properly, insulin opens up muscle cells and allows glucose to enter, providing the cells with fuel. When this system breaks down, the muscles don't have the fuel that they need to work which cause constant fatigue and hunger to a diabetic person.
There are treatment for diabetes that have been developed after the disease first discovered. Among those are insulin therapy. Which are being injected or inhaled into the diabetic person body. This treatment are commonly used to treat person with the Type 1 diabetes. Beside that, there are also drugs such as Pioglitazone and Rosiglitazone that are intended to increase the sensitivity of the cell towards insulin. There are other type of medication for diabetes. The medication depends on the patient diabetes type and suitability. Patient are recommended to consult with a doctor before taking any medication.
Diabetes can be prevented. Although the method are not 100% success but it is better to prevent than to cure. Regular exercise are the usual method that are being recommended to prevent diabetes. By staying physically active, a person can manage their weight and improving blood flow. Exercise is especially important if genetics put you at risk for developing the disease. Beside exercise, increased intake of fresh fruits and vegetables also help in preventing diabetes. Studies have shown that bioflavonoids, the pigments that lend fruits and plants their color, may stimulate insulin production and inhibit glycation, the process in which damaged glucose molecules bind with proteins to create advanced glycation end products, or AGEs. While most AGEs are harmless, others disturb molecular functioning and contribute to organ and nerve damage. To better understand how this occurs, remember that glycation is what causes food in the oven to brown.
